FIRST, For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology
has robotics programs for students from Kindergarten through High School, with 61,000 teams (3,660 of them FRC teams) in over 95 countries, and makes possible $80 million in college scholarships, 35% of which are for non-engineering degrees. The program exists because of the generosity and passion of over 250,000 mentors, coaches, judges and volunteers.
Power Surge is in the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) program for students ages 14-18.
In the fall students recruit, train on tools and safety, fundraise, and hold outreach events. The year’s game is announced at the beginning of January. Students then have six weeks to build, program and test a 120lb robot to meet a number of challenges. Competition season is in March and April, when teams compete and collaborate in alliances of three vs. three.

Connecticut 4-H
Power Surge is grateful to Connecticut 4-H for their support. Connecticut 4-H is part of the youth development program of UConn Extension.
Their mission, “to assist all youth ages 5-18 in acquiring knowledge, developing leadership and life skills while forming attitudes that will enable them to become self-directing, productive and contributing members of their families and communities,” aligns perfectly with the mission of FIRST. 4-H sponsors a number of FIRST teams in Connecticut.

These team members volunteered at a FIRST FRC District event back in 2017, during their freshmen year.
